Rideau Retirement Residence and the Chalmers Foundation can count more than 80 team members amongst their staff and volunteers. Recreation staff, Servers, Nurses, Care Aides, Housekeepers and more are only some of the very important people working to ensure our residents are well taken care of every hour of every day. Our positions are either permanent or casual.

Job Descriptions
Food services – Cook
Prepares and/or serves meals, and provides direction to food service workers, clients, and/or volunteers. Positions are available both in the kitchen as cook, or in the front of house as a server. Typical functions and responsibilities include preparing meals and snacks in accordance with established menus and recipes, by performing duties such as planning food preparation and cooking schedules, cooking, roasting, grilling, baking, testing for palatability, and carving. Modifies and adjusts established menus as required.
Food services – Server
Provides food service by performing duties such as setting up dining areas, bringing out and putting
away supplies, operating dispensing machines, and serving food and beverages. Operates a cash
register, and takes cash and/or meal tickets for food items. Performs limited food preparation such as heating prepared food, and making tea, coffee, toast, salads, and sandwiches. Assists Cooks by performing duties such as washing, peeling, slicing, and storing vegetables and fruit, and counting, weighing, and measuring ingredients.
Concierge
Perform basic administrative/reception duties. Typical functions and responsibilities include running errands to assist guests, arranging transportation and upon residents and guests request, provide information and recommendations on facility and features, dining, entertainment and recreation. Additional duties can include assisting other departments with small tasks and assisting residents in getting in touch with the correct department.
Housekeeping
Performs housekeeping duties such as sweeping, mopping floors, vacuuming, dusting, laundry, and
washing walls, windows, and ceilings. Typical functions and responsibilities include cleaning, washing, and disinfecting building areas such as walls, windows, ceilings, floors, carpets, air vents, furniture, mattresses, blinds, and washrooms by methods such as dusting, polishing, vacuuming, sweeping, wet mopping, shampooing, waxing, and buffing, using various manual and power cleaning equipment.
Wellness
Performs wellness and assistive duties such as monitoring resident well-being in accordance with the policy of the residence. Typical functions and responsibilities include performing medication assistance and care tasks, including BP monitoring, Catheter care, medication assistance/administration including eye drops, eye ointments, inhalers, and more as delegated or when part of routine assistance of daily living.
As a not for profit foundation, we operate thanks to the generosity and the support of our community. This means that we always welcome new volunteers to help us with activities, events and more casual commitments.

JOB DESCRIPTION
As a Recreation Volunteer, you will be a valued member of our team, helping to enhance the lives of our residents through engaging social, recreational, and wellness activities. This role offers an opportunity to build relationships, bring joy, and contribute to a vibrant community atmosphere.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the recreation team with daily events and activities
- Assist in setting up and tidying activity areas
- Encourage and participate in social interaction with residents
- Help facilitate games, arts and crafts, entertainment, and special events
- Escort or accompany residents to programs within the residence
- Provide friendly companionship and a welcoming presence
- Promote a fun, inclusive, and respectful environment
- Support staff with distributing activity materials and refreshments
- Assist with decorating and updating bulletin boards or calendars
- Join in holiday and seasonal celebrations as available
- Perform other duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS
- A warm, compassionate, and patient demeanor
- Interest in working with seniors and enhancing their quality of life
- Willingness to engage in conversation and group activities
- Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team
- Reliable and punctual
- No prior experience necessary—training will be provided
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Interaction with male and female residents of all ethnic and cultural backgrounds;
- Combination of natural light and fluorescent lighting;
- Exposure to the elements (external building and property);
- Exposure to variable temperatures both hot and cold;
- Lifting alone and with assistance;
- Pushing/pulling content;
- Crouching, kneeling, stooping/bending for short periods of time;
- Walking and climbing stairs frequently;
- Standing for long periods of time;
- Engagement and/or exposure to various therapy programs focused on providing residents with the highest quality of life in our Homes including but not limited to pet therapy, spiritual events and musical therapy.
